Tech Cards for Set 12

Hello everyone, it has been some time since our last post. I hope you’re staying safe and in good health. 2020 was a year of struggle and adjustment but the Dragon Ball Super Card Game has kept the passion alive. In a matter of weeks, we will have Set 12 – Vicious Rejuvenation. Below you will find some tech cards that I think have some potential to see play.

First let’s start with the Black cards.

Unrelenting Assault Trunks a simple Over Realm 3 with 15000 attack but his Auto is what caught my attention. “Auto – When this card is sent to the Warp from your Battle Area or deck, add it to your hand”. Unrelenting Assault Trunks has synergy with one of the new Black leaders from Set 12, Gogeta, Fateful Fusion.

Gogeta, Fateful Fusion allows you to Warp up to the top 5 cards of your deck. If you Warp Unrelenting Assault Trunks, it gets added to your hand. Essentially being a card “drawn”. In your hand it can be used as Combo Power or you can splash Vegeks, Spacetime Synthesis as he serves as a Fusion material. He can also be a free Over Realm that you can play at any time, at the end of the turn, he will just go back to your hand.

The next Black card I will be talking about is Supreme Kai of Time, Time Disruptor.

Time Disruptor is a Counter Play for one energy that does not allow Battle cards with an energy cost of 2 or less to attack until the start of your opponents next turn. You also get to draw a card when it is played. So what is Time Disruptor good against? It slows down the new Whis Skill-less strategy. It also slows down the new Shroom and Salsa, Gohanks, and Gogeta Xeno decks.

Now lets talk about Yellow. For Yellow we have Darkness Eye Beam.

Darkness Eye Beam has never seen competitive play until maybe now. Paired up with the new reboot Mecha Frieza, they make a good pair. Mecha Frieza will reduce the energy cost of this card by one Yellow. So for one Energy you can put all of your opponents Battle cards to rest mode. Now this can be very good against a heavy Blocker deck like Bulma and Syn Shenron. Once you are ready to go for game, play Darkness Eye Beam and Rest their Blockers! Perfect Side card if you ask me.

The Towa Leader from the Ultimate deck can be built in many different ways. One card that has stood out to me is Super 17, Hell’s Storm Unleashed.

Super 17 along side Lord Slug Unbridled Might can be brought out on turn three, making your opponent lose up to four life just by playing him! This is all possible because of Lord SLug, the Shadow Warrior.

Lord Slug, the Shadow Warrior can be played for one energy due to Towa’s skill. So you can play him on turn two and leave one energy open to use his skill. The first attack your opponent throws at you, you activate Blocker and proc his skill to play Lord Slug, Unbridled Might. Unbridled Might can then attack a Rested Battle card or at your opponents Unison to gain value. After that you play Super 17 using Successor and make your opponent go down to four Life. Not only that but when Super 17 attacks, he can Rest two cards. This means, Battle cards, Unisons, Leader and Energy while drawing a card! Talk about a Hell Storm Unleashed.

The next card I am going to talk about is an old card and may not see competitive play but it can be a nice play against slow decks. One of the new Green Leaders from Set 12 is Lord Slug. Now Lord Slug plays unlike any Leader we have seen before. Lord Slug makes your opponent draw cards. Now this can be seen as a downside but with the following tech card, it can mitigate all the advantage you give to your opponent.

The card I am talking about is Ready to Strike Piccolo. Piccolo makes your opponent place cards from their hand to their drop until they have 6. This means that whatever advantage your opponent gained from your skills is now gone. This makes it so that they have to clear Piccolo. On top of that, if need be, Piccolo is a Blocker which can be useful at some point in the game. Now I know paying three energy for this card may be hefty but against slow match ups, this can be done. The Lord Slug deck can play cards like Frieza, Charismatic Villain and Dormant Potential Unleashed to protect Piccolo.

Well that is all the tech cards that I have for you today. Expect more articles to come. I am super excited to play with the new set! Feel free to share with your friends and make sure to save this as a favorite site. The site will be updated with player interviews, deck profiles, articles, links to our latest YouTube video and more! Your one stop source for all The Doods content.

Preparing for Battle!

Premier events are the back-bone of the competitive Dragon Ball Super Card Game community. These events that happen all over the world keep the players well informed on the current best decks. North America has the most premier events thanks to CoreTCG, PPG, Carta Magica, Daylon Mack and many others. With so much information being thrown at you and the vast library of cards being added monthly, how do you prepare for events. I will go into how my team and I practice and what you can do to be better prepared.

Let’s take the upcoming Las Vegas Regional and T.O.P. events as an example. Set 9 will be legal for both. Apart from the secret rares, all the cards have now been shown and you can start to create a picture of what the best decks will be from set 9. You can use information from content creator YouTube videos, from articles that are posted online and even from watching people play on stream or on third party sites online. From all these mediums, we know that Frieza/Cooler decks have a target on their backs. So now you either make a Frieza/Cooler deck to beat the mirror match or play another deck that can beat it.

Use the best tools at your disposal to search for cards. You may discover a card from a previous set that can be good now. The official Dragon Ball Super Card Game wedsite, Shenron’s Lair and DBS Decks are good sources to get lost in. Both Shenron’s Lair and DBS Decks allow you to create your own deck online and view it. This will help you have a visual reference of your card ratios.

Miguel Gallegos takes a different approach. Once he has figured out his main deck/side deck, he compiles all 65 cards into one deck. Depending on the meta, using this method, he is able to figure out if certain side cards can be main decked. These cards will have to be flexible and be able to combat not just one deck. This will also allow you narrow down your side deck choices if one is moved to the main deck. Once you have a deck made, test it! Play online, print out proxies and play with your friends. This will be the best way to see what your deck is missing, what cards you need to add or take out.

The day of the event is today. You have polished your deck to the best of your ability. You’ve had breakfast, have snacks and water in your backpack, bought new sleeves for your deck. Round one is up and you are playing against Bryan Samuel of all people on stream. Now you are nervous and contemplating your plays for too long. This will affect the way you play the match. The best thing to do in these scenarios is focus on your game. Do not worry about who you are playing or who is watching. Create a tunnel vision for your cards and the cards your opponent is playing. It is very easy to misplay when you are nervous and on the spotlight.

With so much more cards being released through out the year and many more events headed our way, it is important to know how to prepare. Some tournaments can go on for ten or more hours! If you lose a match, don’t let it discourage you. Use that match and learn what you could have done differently and apply it to your next games. Having friends who support you also gives players a huge boost. I hope that you were able to take something with you and remember to take your Senzu Beans! I hope to see you at the Las Vegas Regionals and the T.O.P! Be on the look out for CardForge Gaming to be at the event!

Sincerely, Krash.

New Year, New Skills.

Happy new year everyone! I am back from holiday break and ready to start talking about Dragon Ball once again. During my break I attended The Doods X Cardforge Gaming tournament and ended up making it to top 16 and earning my invite for the highly anticipated Daylon Mack: Tournament of Power. I played Hatchhyack for the event and I enjoyed the deck. Thanks to the homie Justin Tang for the list. Competing at this event only made me want to keep playing and look forward to all the new cards in the horizon. Set 9 has only begun to be spoiled and I am already excited for what’s to come. Kid Buu (who is my favorite character) has been spoiled as the new black cards! I can’t wait to see what Bandai has in store for the all-mighty Kid Buu.

With the Surge expansion sets soon to be released, the set 9 dash packs, the championship packs, set 9 and the starter and expert decks, we have a lot of reading and testing to do. The meta is wide open and anything can take the Daylon Mack: Tournament of Power and the Dragon Ball regional on February, 25th and 26th. As more cards are spoiled, I will do a card review of what has caught my eye. For now, let’s take a look at the new skills coming out in set 9!

Invoker – Is the new Red/Blue skill being introduced in set 9. When you have a battle card with the key-word skill Invoker, all your Red/Blue extra cards cost 1 energy! This has so many applications already with cards that have been spoiled and with cards from the Magnificent Collection. Combination Attack just went up in price due to the announcement of Invoker. Combination Attack is a Red/Blue extra card that cost 2 energy. It meets the requirements to be used by Invoker. When used in combination with Invoker, you just need to pay 1 energy to use. That’s not all, Combination Attack, after returning one of your opponents battle cards with an energy cost of 5 or less back to the hand during battle, it will return one of your energy to activate mode. Making Combination Attack cost 0 energy. We’re in This Together is another Red/Blue card that can be used with Invoker. Using them both together can clear your opponents cards for just one energy!

Successor- Is the new key-word skill for Green/Yellow. This new skill is reminiscent of Synchro Summoning from Yu-Gi-Oh! You are able to play a battle card from your hand who has Successor as their skill by sending Green/Yellow battle cards from your side of the field to the drop area and by tapping its required energy. This means that you are able to play battle cards with Successor who may have a high energy cost for less! The trick is having the battle cards to send from your field to the drop area. One combo that comes to mind to summon a 6 drop Successor is by playing Saiyan Teamwork Cabba and summoning Caulifla, the Awakened Sister. Not only are you getting two attacks with Cabba and Caulifa, but Caulifa will also tap down one of your opponents energy or battle card.

Now you are able to play a 6 drop Successor like Cell, Devour of the Masses. Cell, Devour of the Masses when he is played by Successor, he can KO one of your opponents battle cards ignoring barrier AND they discard one card. He also has another ability that triggers when he is KO’d or removed by an opponents skill. He will draw you 3 cards! I am excited to see what other battle cards we get with this new skill.

As more cards are revealed in the coming days, I will review what stands out to me the most. Let me know what you are excited for and if these new skills are better than what we have gotten in the past.

The new season/year of Dragon Ball Super is looking very promising. I am looking forward to attending more events and playing with all the new cards. On behalf of The Doods, we wish you a Happy New year!

Sincerely, Krash.

Meta Analysis Post PPT Las Vegas

We are fresh out of the PPT in Las Vegas and Broly, The Awakened Threat takes another event. We all thought that Baby, Out for Revenge for was going to be the dominant deck this past weekend but we were wrong. Many talented players such as Bryan Samuels and Russell Stelzer took a Tri-color approach to the deck. Meanwhile Tommy Vi (who ended up winning the event) took a Blue/Green Broly deck. Granted his super combos are yellow and he did play Great Ape Bardock, Raider’s Warcry but his energy consisted of only two colors.

At first glance his list looks average but if we dive into his ratios and card choices we can see that he prepared well for the event. Not including many yellow cards meant he was unable to play Cold Bloodlust but in return he made his deck more consistent. Whenever he activated Zen-oh Button you knew he was untapping all of his energy, which is why he maxed out on it.

Let’s take a look at the Top 16 decks of the event. 8 different leaders makes this such a diverse format. Janemba, Demigra, Shenron, and even Golden Frieza from previous formats make an appearance. Ramon DeVilla, a fellow Dood member managed to get top 16 playing Beerus. My favorite deck that topped was David Fujimara’s Hatchhyack deck. His deck was tailored to beat this worst match-up, Android 21. He mained Dende, New to the Job to help against the ramp decks. I watched as David beat an Android 21 player who wasn’t able to ramp and had too much pressure. Ghastly Malice Demigra was a surprise to see. Turles, the Unstoppable Ghost Warrior from the new tournament pack helps this deck push for more attacks and damage. Bryan Gomez piloted Demigra to a top 4 finish. His decklist was also able to grind out the slow matches against Hatchhyack.

Now to the fly in the room, Baby. Another fellow Dood member Jeffrey Lina made top 8 playing Baby. This was the most feared deck in the room and for good reason. It is a very versatile strategy that can play defensively with Epochal Grudge Great Ape Baby or aggressively with Great Ape Baby, the Ultimate Evil Lifeform in combination with SS4 Son Goku, a Heartfelt Plea. The Doods have a Switch tournament coming up at the end of December hosted by Card Forge Gaming and I expect to see a variation of these decks show up. With the ban of Zen-oh Button on January 17th I am curious to see how Broly, the Awakened Threat will adapt to the new format.

All in all, this format is healthy and not dominated by one single deck. With the regional season around the corner and the vast amount of new cards Bandai is throwing at us, the library of decks to choose for an event only grows and grows. Edwin’s Top 3 card picks for set 8

Hello everyone, my name is Edwin Rivas from The Doods to tell you my top three card picks for set 8.

Ultimate Blow is a 1 drop black extra card that is a counter-play. It gives one of your battle cards 10k power and revenge. Revenge is a powerful keyword but not a lot of cards have it. It has the same wording as King Vegeta’s Surprise Attack which was from set 1. It was popular to side King Vegeta’s Surprise Attack to give blockers revenge or your deadly defenders. Bandai then errata King Vegeta’s Surprise Attack with the way revenged now triggers. Revenge now triggers on attack so you couldn’t give revenge to a battle card mid-battle and have the attacker die. Ultimate Blow allows you to drop revenge on a blocker or a battle card that you want to protect. This card being black makes it splashable anywhere which can see a rise in deadly defenders or awe-inspiring Intimidator SSB Vegito.

Gigantic Bomber Dr. Uiro – I feel this card has a lot of potential in any blue/green deck. It’s a 3 cost blocker that has an auto where on play you choose two battle cards from your opponent’s drop area and place it either under this card or under your Dr. Uiros’s Lab field card. This holds insane value in the Dr. Uiro deck as it speeds up your win condition of having 17 cards under your field card. This can also disrupt your opponents strategy if they rely on having things in their drop area. You can take away their sparking 5 for their negates, sparking 7 for Son Goku Path to Greatness, taking away for their revive targets, etc. This card also has the keyword revive so you can trigger its auto again when it gets ko’d.

Android 17, Protector of Wildlife. This Android 17 is one of those multicolored cards that come into your energy untapped as long as you have another of the same multicolor in your energy already. I’m excited for this because it’s good for Android 21, Dr. Uiro, and for Soul Striker. I am an avid Soul Striker lover and I feel this Android 17 can reborn the Blue/green version of the deck. Keeping this one short and simple.

Thank you for reading and stay tuned for more articles on the way.

Sincerely, Edwin.

Jalope’s Top 3 Card Picks for Set 8

Jalope here, from The Doods, bringing you the top three picks I’m looking forward to in set 8. I’ll be giving my insight on a leader, extra and battle card.

Dr.Lychee & Hatchhyack is a new black machine mutant making his appearance in the new set: Malicious Machinations. With a permanent restricting you to only charge black battle cards and the front half of the leader, unable to attack, thorough deck building is required. This leader does have one unique and potentially meta warping auto, he restricts players from attacking with multiple battle cards that cost 7 or less. Having this built-in protection helps you from losing to “go wide” strategies like U6 and allows you to build your deck to take advantage of the situation while your opponent wouldn’t have the same opportunity in game one. In certain tournament settings, such as Team Wars, there is a chance you automatically win simply for having this advantage. Beware: decks with high cost bombs get around this as it only restricts battle cards with 7 or less, so high cost overrealms can still sneak through and steal games.

SURPRISE!! Birthday Party is a red extra card with a 3 energy cost. However, it’s permanent skill alleviates it’s price as you can play it without paying it’s energy cost if you have a red/yellow multicolor card in your energy. Birthday party is specific to red Bulma leaders and lets you draw 2 then discard 2 cards at the end of your turn. “Looting” or drawing then discarding cards is powerful in getting rid of extra copies for fresh cards and helping to set up your drop area. The added benefit of being a field card means it is hard to remove from the board so the constant advantage it provides will last the whole game. I will be personally brewing with this card in mind to try and set up Kaio-Ken Son Goku Defender of Earth as the payoff.

Android 21, Violent Predator is an absolute powerhouse. When you play Android 21, Violent predator from your hand, your opponent shuffles all mono colored battle cards and energy, it has deflect so there is no real interaction to stop it once it is played. This is on the same level as Gogeta, Hero Revived, as it has the potential to clear entire boards and still be the card that attacks for game. Triple attack and 25000 base power is a threat that will force opponents to commit a lot of resources every turn they have to defend against it, further compounding their problems since they will inevitably lose energy to the Android’s auto. Even though it comes with a cost of 8 energy you may be surprised on how fast and consistent this card will be played on turn 5. Between objection, Android 16 Energy Amplification, Objection and a few other ramp cards, getting to 8 energy may be a new normal in the upcoming format.

Hope you enjoy my choices for this set review and stay tuned for more content coming soon.

Sincerely, Jalope (Felipe)
