Las Vegas Top 16 M.H.A Tournament Report

Journey to be the number1 pro hero lol jkjk – My First Ever My Hero/UVS In-Person Event

Well for those who don’t know me my name is Jeffrey (but my friends call me Jeff). I am an avid card player who has played almost every card game out there. From Yugioh, MTG, Pokemon and most recently and more commonly Dragon Ball Super. I am a member of The Doods which is a small but amazing group of guys who I lean towards for advice and aid when it comes to card games. I recently just started playing the MHA card game when my friend Kevin decided to buy a case and help us all make our first decks. During this time I was quite intrigued and was quite excited to see what events Jasco was going to throw and then Boom flash forward to last weekend and Im competing in my first ever In-person event

Leading up to the event I was quite sure of only one thing. And that one thing was I wasn’t sure of anything. Set 2 was just recently released and I was already behind on the set 1 Characters so adding more was gonna make prepping for the event harder for me. With that logic in play I decided that the best thing for me to do is play something that was comfortable with then playing something I would need to learn on the fly. It came down to 2 decks: Asui 1 on life or Momo on ALL. First, let’s get this out the way, yes I play Asui on life cause that was the only way I knew how to play her and second it really is not that bad i think lol but i guess that player preference. I ended up choosing Asui over Momo due to the fact that I was not sure what time rules are in MHA and the more heavily persuasive reason of I was getting 2-0 by anyone I tested it with(Soooo Safe to say I saw the signs lol). Now that I knew what I was playing I was ready to go.

Round 1 VS Kevin Broberg with Ochaco 1

Result 2-1

Win – Going into round 1 I definitely was nervous. Round 1 sets the tone for the event and I wanted to make sure that we get off to a great start. Then comes Kevin, (this nice guy whose first words to me are a friendly hey) After we exchange greetings my nerves start to die down (due to Kevin’s hospitality and friendliness)  and we start setting up. Then boom I see it, Kevin’s UFS champion mat. Thinking to myself what a way to start your first ever UFS/UVS/MHA tournament. You have to play a dude who’s played this game at the highest level…….. Great. My only thought going into game 1 is thank god I won the dice roll.

Game 1 starts and I start really well and lay down quite a few foundations setting up my kill turn by turn 3.

Game 2 starts and He starts really well and lays down quite a few foundations setting up his kill turn by turn 3.

Game 3 is a little bit different where we both try to throw stuff at each other to see where it lands but ultimately me winning the dice roll gives me the edge. And if i’m being straight up if Kevin would have won the dice roll its prolly I who starts the day off 0-1.

After the match Kevin Compliments me on my deck and play style and I definitely start my day with some confidence. Thanks again Kevin for an Amazing Match

Round 2 VS Monama on Life

Result 2-1

Win – Starting things off I wanna apologize to  those whose names I forgot. Unfortunately I was not able to use the online pairing and can’t recall everyone’s names as of now. But going into round 2 I played Monama for the first time. I was intrigued to see what Monama did and was shocked to find out what I found out.

Game 1 starts off with me after I win the dice roll and I play a typical froppy game. A Lot attacks with the hope they cant stop it. Fortunately for me I was able to execute that plan and was able to take game 1.

Game 2 is the shock and awe factor. He swings with a throw that makes his Monama obtain my Asui’s ability and uses my own leader’s skill against me. Definitely should’ve seen that coming but bad news to me was I was about to get a piece of my own medicine. I get destroyed is a nice way to put it.

Game 3 is more like game one for me thankfully and I was able to secure a 2-0 start to start the day.

Overall thoughts were that it had to be one of the more creative decks I saw this weekend.

Round 3 & 4 VS All-Might 2 (AKA Throw Might)

Result  2-1 and 2-1

Win x 2

Going into the tournament I was quite familiar with this deck. This deck was the choice of my Teammate Russell Cruz so safe to say I did get some practice vs this deck. It was during these games I Did lose the dice roll. Normally that would be very bad but it was during these games i got to show off my tech choice of the weekend. READY,GET SET,GO. I gotta give credit where credit is due starting by thanking my teammate Kevin Castillo for introducing me to this card. It really was that missing piece I needed to help make my deck more viable if I did end up losing the dice roll. After some back and forth games i was able to come out victorious and start my day 4-0

Round 5 VS Daniel Nelson Eraser Head

Result 0-2

Lost

They say in order to get to the top, you gotta experience some let down and defeat to learn from and in round 5 I was quickly shown that I still had some learning left to do. For those who don’t know Daniel started the day with a 2 round bye by winning a provisional with well you guessed it Froppy. He knew my deck Inside and out and his defense was on a S Tier level. I string multiple barrages of attacks and I could not push through his defense. And Like a skilled boxer he just hit me hard with counter punches and I was not able to gain control of the match again. Daniel easily hands me my first loss of the day, a swift 2-0. After the match Daniel offers me advice on what other things I could have done differently that would have given him a harder time. I gladly accepted and was quite amazed he was willing to give me pointers. With that said, I had to rebound and get ready for round 6 cause the end goal was still in reach even with this loss.

Round 6 VS Ochaco 1

Result 2-1

Win

In retrospect this was a match up I was quite familiar with. Kevin made this as his first MHA deck and it’s been something of a staple ever since. So going into this match and after already playing against it in round 1 I knew I had a game plan that could be successful if I just executed it. I was focused from the start and was able to get this one after some back and forth.the thing I’ll remember most about this match was my opponent was yet again just a nice guy. Now I was a win away from all but guaranteeing my Top 16 finish.

Round 7 Vs Garett Brett Mei Life

Result 2-1

Win

They say sometimes ignorance is bliss and in this case that very well might have applied. The round before this I was watching how Daniel (My round 5) was doing. He was playing this fellow in an orange jersey playing Mei. Now i Heard whispers through people that he was a champion or something in this game but not to the extent I found out later. So seeing their game end in a Tie in what can be called as the most defensive match I ever seen so far in my MHA/MVS career was quite impressive. Now Flash forward a round later and Garett is the man in my way of topping the event. GARETT BRETT who I later found out is like A 5 time champion that has like 5 Character cards designed after him (from what I started to gather) and is prolly on the MT. Rushmore of UVS players  as a whole. OOOOOO Shiitake Mushrooms hit me as we set up.

Game 1- Going into this game I had very little Mei testing and by little i mean absolutely none. LOL this was the first time I ever encountered a Mei. So I did the only thing I knew how to do. I put the pedal down and tried to out speed Garett and his Mei deck. 20 mins past i find that that was prolly the dumbest idea i had and Garett just like the pro he is identifies my flaws that game and hands me a game 1 lost. Not a good way to start this match

Game 2 – Going into my side board I called upon a card I sided in almost every match; Net Gun Surprise.I felt this would help string atks at the end with little resistance by stunning his foundations. I knew going into this game I would have to take a different approach. I was not going to go through a brick wall twice. Being a former basketball player you are taught that sometimes you just need to let the game come to you and that is what I tried to do this time around. I used the first few turns setting up foundations, waiting for my opening and hoping it would appear soon and lucky for me it did. I will say I definitely got lucky here at this point but hey we were in Vegas and sometimes lady luck is on your side. Garett decided to go into Deadlock not noticing i had a First Villains Encounter and i was able to string that and some frog whips to clog his board and use back to back Frog lashings to end the game. Game 3 for all the marbles.

Game 3 – At this point I knew I had an uphill battle ahead of me. Garett was going first and I was playing a Character with only 20 life so getting killed early is always a possibility and all. We set up and get things going. The game goes as you expect it early on. Garret starts to assemble infinite resources( it feels like) through Box Full of Babies and I start to get ready to make one big barrage of atks. At this point time is called and ends with me getting the final push. I do wanna point out Garett sportsmanship was on full display here by telling me to take my time and that I got a full ten minutes to make a play knowing this was my first In-person Tournament for this game. I make the push, showcasing Life Asui’s greatest strength…….. DRAW POWER. I Draw numerous times this turn drawing multiple atks (you can ask Shane lol) and I just keep going until we get to the point Garett needs to check a 6 to survive and he ends up checking a 5. At this point my team and friends cheer me on knowing that all but sealed my top 16. And me and Garett embracing each other in watch can be called my best game of the weekend. Garett you are definitely one of the best for a reason and all i can say is thank you for an amazing match.

Round 8 David Pena Ochaco 2 Death

Result 1-2

Loss

TBH Myself and David were in a good spot here. We both basically were already in the Top 16 and it was just seeding here and we played one of the most friendly Round 8 table 2 Games you will ever see. To give you the spark notes version David wins the dice roll and beats me game 1 by going first. I go first game two and win and he seals the deal game 3 by you guessed it, by going first. Overall tho Me and David have a great match and i make friends along the way due to this match. Safe travels Fellas

Day 1 Is Complete and after some technical errors being fixed I finished 11th in swiss and made it to Day 2 Top 16.

Top 16 Colby Cram Ochaco 2 Death

Result 1-2

Loss

When the Brackets were shown I saw I once again matched up with a Death Ochaco. Lucky for me I played a befriended David the night before and he gave me some pointers on how to handle the match up more effectively in the future. Colby is a veteran of this game and he came in ready to play. Game 1 he takes it to me fast with heavy hits and fast speed making it impossible for me to block or even get to a kill turn. Game 1 is an absolute disaster and he beats me fairly easily and quickly. Game 2 He sides with a new character in Ojiro. Honestly it’s a brilliant side card that in reality gives him a good advantage in game 2 vs Frog. Luckily for me I had know idea at the time what it did and said screw it. We are just gonna do what the deck does best and string a silly barrage of atks. Somehow it works for me and gets me to a game 3.

Going into game 3 I was worried. I have yet to really figure the deck out and didn’t know what to do really. I stay concervative and start with a simple 4 foundations. Funny thing was, Colby was going for the win that turn. He killed 2 foundations dropping me to 2 foundations and I actually thought he had me when I miscounted the check that turn. Upon going back to my turn I had 7 cards in hand but only 2 foundations on board so I rebuilt more  and hope I can survive his atks next turn. His next turn a sigh of relief occurs when he draws no atks. I still have a chance. With 6 foundations I decided to just go for it. Leave it all on the line. I knew it was going to be a tall task getting him from a character that has 33 life to start with to 0 but at this point I felt like I had no choice. I start off Crow and Frog and then the usual frog cards to follow and start to dwindle the life down. Slowly I chip away till he has 3 life left and it comes down to the final play. Check a foundation or action and I go to top 8 or check orange and it’s all over there and yup i check orange. In the city known for luck, my luck finally ran out. I exchanged pleasantries with Colby and wished him best of luck in the top 8.

Overall

If someone would’ve told me I would of top this event at the beginning, I would prolly think nothing of it. I was just so new to the game, that expectations were undefined and just not there. Now after this weekend i definitely can say that i am very excited to go to other events and hopefully build upon this. I met great people this weekend and played against some phenomenal opponents. I am planning on going to GenCon so hopefully I can perform well there as well. With that said I do wanna do a shoutout to My teammates, My Friends, My Brothers this weekend in supporting me. Kevin C. and Russell C my Carmates and Roommates this trip(congrats to them for winning a provisional and top 4), Justin Tang and Zach W for always being my bois. Martin A who couldn’t make it but was there in spirit and of course the rest of the doods. Thanks everyone again and hope to see everyone in Indy.

Plus ultra my DOODS

DECK PROFILE: PPG Top 16 Launch

One of the highly anticipated decks of Set 12 is Launch. Her unique take on the Awaken mechanic and the ability to fight off the meta decks makes her a deck to prepare for. Krieg Mayer took this deck to a Top 16 finish! He was kind enough to bring us his deck list and the interactions with his card choices.

“The build of Launch chosen for this event was Red Green aggro. The deck was inspired by Ryan Conolee
and the El Toppo Loco teams original build. Without their videos and insight, I would have not chosen
the deck to play!! Huge thanks to them!!

The decks primary goal is to be aggressive in turns 1-3 with hopes of having the opponent out of life by
end of our turn 3. The deck was designed to abuse the free play mechanic on several key red and green
cards and go wide with aggro to force our opponent out of recourses.

Launch is a very draw heavy deck, but reliant on key cards to enable her draw abilities. On her front,
she is a 5000 leader that allows you to draw 1 card per turn when you combo. Her flip or as I call it “The
Achoo Mechanic” allows you to flip the leader to the backside when one of your life cards is flipped face
up by one of your card effects. This is by far the best part of this deck. On her backside, she is a 10k with
a once per turn when she attacks to give one of your opponent’s cards -5000 power, and once per turn
when you combo you can draw a card. On her backside she also has the “Achoo Mechanic” once per
turn. You cannot flip her back and forth on the same turn, so you have to understand when to use the
cards that flip her in correct orders to keep her on the side you want during yours and your opponents
turns.

With the cards above, you can sequence the “Achoo Mechanic” reliably in a 50-51 card deck. At higher
numbers in the deck, you will want to run some variance of the TP promo and the above red cards to
make sure you can fully utilize the “Achoo Mechanic”. The Launch SR was extremely vital and knowing
when to combo it to maximize the Activate: Battle part of the card to combo with it from the drop area.
My tech with Hasty Dispatch Dyspo proved very useful during the event. I wanted to make sure the
green cards in the deck were plentiful to help with our Arrival package, but he also allowed the fun plays
of buying back our 1 drop Launch or Bulma on turn one or after our board was cleared.

The big damage dealers in the deck are the Arrival cards followed up with the Piccolo Jr. from the Draft
box 3 set. These cards allowed for turn 1-3 pressure with minimal effort and investment. The game plan
is to charge a red on turn 1 and pass. If you are on the draw and can attack t1 then you can apply small
pressure and draw some cards with your leader’s effects. We want to pass with an open red to utilize
the Arrival mechanic to its fullest, as well as combo to keep our life total high. When opponent attacks,
we want to use Nappa Demolition Man to combo, trigger arrival, play Gogeta Resonant Explosion,
trigger SS Gogeta Acrobatic Warrior, destroy one of their battle cards with energy cost 4 or less, and
now have 3 battle cards on board. The perfect sequence would look like this:
Opp Attacks
Combo Launch or Bulma. Trigger Draw on leader. Achoo Mechanic, flip a life. Draw and flip. Combo
Nappa, trigger draw on backside of leader. Arrival Gogeta 5, free play red Gogeta. At end of combat free
play Nappa.
Then after the opponent passes, we have our big turn 2!! On turn 2, we either play Piccolo Jr. Eradicator
of Peace if he is in our hand, or use the Assimilate extra card to find one. The fun part of this interaction
is Piccolo Jr. with Gogeta Acrobatic Warrior. When Piccolo attacks, he triggers his Alliance mechanic,
allowing you to draw power from a red or green battle card. His Alliance mechanic states

If your Leader Card is red : This card gains power equal to the total power of the cards switched
to Rest Mode by this skill for the battle; draw 2 cards, and if your opponent has 3 or more life,
deal 1 damage to them.
This allows us to burn our opponent’s life even if the attack is negated. The draw 2 is a huge plus as well,
as it gives us draw in to move of the pieces for the deck. With Gogeta Acrobatic Warrior, we can now
burn our opponents for 2 life on the attack. Optimal attack is opponent at 3-4 life, we attack with
Piccolo Jr., trigger alliance, tap Gogeta, add 15k power to Piccolo, burn opponent 1 from Piccolo (Always
trigger him first due to his stipulation of being above 3 life) then burn 1 from Gogeta, and a 31k Double
Striker coming in before combos. This puts insane pressure on the opponent to combo out or have a kill
card for our Piccolo Jr.

The “Free Play” card package is also one of the best I’ve seen without being reliant on a specific leader.
Trunks triggers to free play when we have a Green Red Multicolor battle card in play
Mercenary Tao triggers when we have 3 non token battle cards in play
Bardock the Resolute triggers when our opponent takes a life from an effect like Critical, Burn, or their
own mechanics.
Bardock Awakened Instincts is a free over-realm 20k that draws 2
Beerus is free played off the Bardock discard trigger
SS3 Goku triggers via our leaders backside neg, or our After Image Techniques
Belmod is free after destroying 3 of our battle cards.
The amount of free plays this deck can throw at opponents life total on t2 is amazing.

The last cards to talk about are the 3 After Image Techniques and the new Secret rare from Set 12
Supreme Kai of Time, Spacetime Unraveler.
In my video deck tech I mentioned moving the Kai to the board, and I was wrong. I had stated that as
she did not make much impact for me during the tournament, but the applications of the card on paper
make her an auto include. She is there to get passed opponents wide boards, eliminate their unisons
and thusly turning off their free play counters, removing blockers, etc.

The deck performed very well for me during the event. Very few hickups with the “Achoo Mechanic”
but when they happened it was very frustrating. So moving forward I would recommend to anyone to
up the number of “Achoo Mechanic” cards to 10, to ensure you can use the ability every turn.

My opponents during the event were all outstanding players. PPG ran a smooth event and made sure
the environment was well sanitized prior to, and we all wore masks and had temp checks prior to
entering. This made me, and many people feel safer given the conditions the world is in right now.

Shout out to my teammates on The Card Guyz for putting up with an old boomers nonsense. Shout out
to El Toppo Loco squad for the deck idea, Ryan Conolee for his Ted Talks about the deck, and to the DBS
Community for giving me a group to call home!!
